சேந்தன் திவாகரம் (திவாகர நிகண்டு) என்பது தமிழில் தோன்றிய முதல் மற்றும் மிகச் சிறந்த நிகண்டு (அகராதி) நூலாகும். இது சொற்களுக்கான பல பொருள்கள், ஒரு சொல் பல பொருள், மற்றும் பல்வேறு பெயர்களை வகைப்படுத்தி அகரவரிசையில் விளக்கும் ஒரு அரிய தமிழ் இலக்கண நூலாகும்.
பண்டைக் காலத்தில் வழக்கில் இருந்த பொருட்கள், அவற்றின் பயன்பாடுகள், கலாச்சாரம், நில அமைப்பு ஆகியவற்றை அறிந்துகொள்ள இந்நூல் ஒரு முக்கிய வரலாற்று ஆவணமாகத் திகழ்கிறது. பின்னர்த் தோன்றிய பிங்கல நிகண்டு, சூடாமணி நிகண்டு போன்றவற்றுக்கு இதுவே அடிப்படையாக அமைந்தது.
Sēndan Tivākaram (the Tivākara Nikaṇṭu) is the earliest and most distinguished nikaṇṭu — a thesaurus-lexicon — to appear in Tamil. A rare work of Tamil scholarship, it classifies and expounds the manifold meanings of words, homonyms (one word bearing many senses) and the many names of things, set out in an ordered, alphabetical arrangement.
Through the things in everyday use in ancient times — their uses, the culture and the lie of the land — this work stands as an important historical record. It became the very foundation upon which the later nikaṇṭus, such as the Piṅkala Nikaṇṭu and the Cūṭāmaṇi Nikaṇṭu, were built.
