41 செவ்வியல் தமிழ் நூல்கள்: எண்ணிம ஆவணகம் 41 Classical Tamil Texts: Digital Archive

The foundational corpus of 41 Classical Tamil texts — Tolkāppiyam, the Caṅkam-age anthologies and idylls (Patiṉeṇmēlkaṇakku), the eighteen lesser texts (Patiṉeṇkīḻkaṇakku), the twin epics (Kāppiyam), the poetics treatise Iṟaiyaṉār Akapporuḷ, and the anthology Muttoḷḷāyiram — gathered into a single digital archive. Two thousand years of poetry, grammar, ethics, and narrative; the literary inheritance from which all subsequent Tamil writing flows.

Director's Message · இயக்குநரின் செய்தி

For more than two millennia, the literature of Classical Tamil has stood among the world's enduring testaments to human civilization — a continuous tradition of poetry, grammar, and scholarship reaching back to the Sangam age and unbroken to the present day. The Central Institute of Classical Tamil, established as the apex institution for the study and promotion of Classical Tamil in India, holds the responsibility of preserving, advancing, and disseminating this inheritance to the world.

This Digital Archive of Classical Tamil Literature represents one important step in that mission — bringing the foundational treatise Tolkāppiyam and the eight Ettuttokai anthologies into a unified, scholarly, and openly accessible digital form. Each verse, each sūtra, each classification of tiṇai and tuṟai carries the weight of a thousand-year commentary tradition, which this archive aims to honour and to make navigable to scholars and students alike.

I invite scholars, students, and lovers of Tamil literature from around the world to engage with this resource. The work continues — toward the complete digitization of the forty-one canonical texts, toward AI-assisted tools for translation, concordance, and lexical discovery, and toward making the vast literary heritage of Classical Tamil genuinely accessible to all.
