Privacy Policy — Tirukkural Multilingual

Central Institute of Classical Tamil · செம்மொழித் தமிழாய்வு மத்திய நிறுவனம்

This app collects no personal data. It has no accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party tracking of any kind. Nothing you do in the app is sent to the Central Institute of Classical Tamil or to anyone else.

In short: the entire book — all 1,330 couplets, the translations, the grammar and metre layers and the fonts — is packaged inside the app. It works completely offline. The single exception is described under The one time the app uses the internet below.

What is stored, and where

The app remembers a few things so it can pick up where you left off. All of it is written to the app's own private storage on your device, under the key kural.settings. It never leaves the device, and it is deleted when you uninstall the app.

Reading preferenceschosen translation languages, interface language, text size, theme, speech rate and voice
Your place in the bookthe last kural you opened
Bookmarkskurals you have starred
Study deckthe kurals you added to spaced-repetition practice, and their review schedule
Daily reminderwhether the daily kural notification is on, and the time you chose

None of this is an identifier. There is no device ID, no advertising ID, no account and no profile.

The one time the app uses the internet

For couplets in chapters 1–100, the app can show a photograph of the palm-leaf manuscript line that carries that couplet, from the Institute's digitised collection. That image is not bundled in the app, and it is fetched only when you tap “show the leaf”. Nothing is downloaded before you ask for it.

Those images are hosted by Zenodo (zenodo.org), operated by CERN. Requesting one reveals your device's IP address and standard request headers to Zenodo, as any web request does. Zenodo's own privacy notice governs that: about.zenodo.org/privacy-policy.

If you never tap that button, the app makes no network requests at all. The scribal reading of each line is bundled as text, so the manuscript layer is still readable offline.

Links that leave the app

A few links — the DOI of a manuscript, its Zenodo record, and the Institute's Digital Archives at digitalarchives.cict.in — open in your own browser. Once you follow one, that site's privacy policy applies, not this one.

Reading aloud

Recitation and commentary are spoken by the text-to-speech engine already installed on your device. The app passes it the text of the couplet and nothing else. Which engine that is, and whether it processes speech on the device or on a server, is determined by your device and its settings, not by this app — see your Android text-to-speech settings if you wish to change or check it.

Notifications

The optional daily kural notification is generated entirely on your device by a local alarm. There is no push service, no server and no message from us. The couplet is read from the copy of the book inside the app. You can turn it off at any time in the app, or in Android's notification settings.

Sharing

When you share a couplet or a couplet card, the app hands the text or image to Android's share sheet and you choose where it goes. The app does not upload it anywhere, and does not record what you shared. A shared image is written to the app's temporary cache so another app can read it, and is cleared with the app's cache.

Permissions, and why each exists

INTERNETsolely to fetch a palm-leaf image when you tap for one
POST_NOTIFICATIONSto show the daily kural, only if you switch it on
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETEDto restore your daily reminder after the device restarts, since Android clears alarms on reboot

The app requests no access to contacts, location, camera, microphone, photos, files or call data.

Children

The app is suitable for readers of any age. Because it collects no personal data from anyone, it collects none from children either.

Changes

If a future version of the app changes what it collects or sends, this page will be updated before that version is published, and the date below will change.
